{"id":44699,"date":"2024-08-12T14:54:06","date_gmt":"2024-08-12T09:54:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/?p=44699"},"modified":"2024-08-12T15:24:42","modified_gmt":"2024-08-12T10:24:42","slug":"supreme-court-overturns-lhc-ruling-confirms-victory-of-plmn-candidates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/pakistan\/supreme-court-overturns-lhc-ruling-confirms-victory-of-plmn-candidates\/","title":{"rendered":"Supreme Court overturns LHC ruling, confirms victory of PLMN candidates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ISLAMABAD: The<a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/pakistan\/chamber-of-commerce-petition-supreme-court-to-nullify-policies-governing-ipps\/\"> Supreme Court of Pakistan<\/a> overturned a ruling by the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/pakistan\/ptis-aliya-hamza-released-from-jail-following-lhc-order\/\">Lahore High Court (LHC)<\/a> and confirmed the election victories of three Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidates.<\/p>\n<p>A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/world\/bangladesh-chief-justice-central-bank-chief-resign-amid-student-protests\/\">Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa<\/a> and including Justice Aqeel Abbasi and Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan, reached a 2-1 verdict, with Justice Abbasi issuing a dissenting opinion.<\/p>\n<p>The case concerned the February elections in constituencies NA-154 Lodhran, NA-81 Gujranwala, and NA-79 Gujranwala. The Supreme Court upheld the Election Commission of Pakistan\u2019s (ECP) decision affirming the victories of Abdul Rehman Kanju, Azhar Qayyum Nahra, and Zulfikar Ahmed.<\/p>\n<p>Azhar Nahra had contested the LHC\u2019s decision to suspend his victory notification for NA-81. Initially, Chaudhry Bilal, an independent candidate supported by PTI, was declared the winner by 7,791 votes.<\/p>\n<p>However, after Nahra requested a recount, the ECP later declared him the winner by 3,100 votes, despite around 10,000 of his votes being invalidated.<\/p>\n<p>Bilal challenged the ECP&#8217;s decision in the LHC, which on April 4, nullified Nahra\u2019s victory notification for NA-81.
