KARACHI: The Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD) has said that the deep depression over the Rann of Kutch coast in the Arabian Sea has intensified into a Cyclonic Storm ‘Asna’<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n

The deep depression<\/a> has moved westward during the last 06 hours and lies about 170km south\/southeast of Karachi and 88km south of Kati Bandar, PMD said in its latest advisory at 4:26 PM.<\/p>\n

Under this\u00a0system\u2019s influence, the PMD has predicted widespread extremely heavy rains and thunderstorms in several districts of Sindh as well as those along the Balochistan coast till August 31.<\/p>\n

Due to the cyclonic activities, the sea conditions are likely to remain rough\/very rough with squally winds 60-670 Km\/hour gusting 80 km\/hour, Met Office said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Due to the cyclone Asna, rain-related incidents in the Indian coastal state of Gujarat have claimed 26 lives over the past four days. More than 18,000 people have been relocated, and around 1,200 rescued from flood-affected areas in the state.<\/p>\n

How cyclone was named Asna?<\/h2>\n

Pakistan named the deep depression over the Arabian Sea which turned into a cyclonic storm, a cyclone Asna. The word Asna means “The One To Be Acknowledged Or Praised” in Urdu.<\/p>\n

The name of this cyclone came from a new list of tropical cyclone names adopted by countries in the WMO\/ESCAP Panel in April 2020. This list is used to name storms over the North Indian Ocean, including the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.<\/p>\n

This is the first cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea in August since 1976. According to the Indian Metrological Department, between 1891 and 2023, only three cyclonic storms formed in the Arabian Sea during August (in 1976, 1964, and 1944).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In 1976, the cyclone developed over Odisha, moved west-northwestwards, emerged into the Arabian Sea, and weakened near the Oman coast. In 1944, the cyclone intensified after emerging into the Arabian Sea.<\/p>\n

In 1964, a short-lived cyclone formed near the South Gujarat coast and weakened near the coast.<\/p>\n
