ATLANTA: <\/span>At least four people died and nine were wounded in a high school shooting near the town of Winder, 70km northeast of Atlanta <\/span>in the US state of Georgia on Wednesday, law enforcement authorities said, with a suspect taken into custody.<\/p>\n

After the latest chapter of America\u2019s gun violence crisis, people gathered at a sports field outside Apalachee High School, some forming a circle with their arms linked.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said four people had been killed. There was no immediate word on a motive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAn additional nine were <\/span>taken<\/span> to various hospitals with injuries. The suspect<\/span> is\u00a0in<\/span> custody and alive. Reports that the suspect has been \u2018neutralized\u2019 are inaccurate,\u201d the bureau said in a\u00a0social media\u00a0post.<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier, school authorities were reported to have sent a message to parents saying they were enforcing a \u201chard lockdown after reports of gunfire.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

After the all-clear was given, parents were invited to the school to be reunited with their\u00a0children, with long lines of vehicles visible outside.<\/span><\/p>\n

The school is located near the town of Winder, about 45 miles (70 kilometers) northeast of Atlanta, the state capital.<\/span><\/p>\n

US President\u00a0Joe Biden\u00a0said he was mourning the dead.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cStudents across the country are learning how to duck and cover instead of how to read and write. We cannot continue to accept this as normal,\u201d he said, referring to the frequency of such attacks across the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

School shootings have become a sadly regular occurrence in the United States, where about a third of adults own a firearm, <\/span>and<\/span> regulations on purchasing even powerful military-style rifles are lax.<\/span><\/p>\n

Polls show a majority of voters favor stricter controls on the use and purchase of firearms, but the powerful gun ownership lobby is opposed to additional restrictions and lawmakers have repeatedly failed to act.<\/span><\/p>\n

Crowds gathered<\/h2>\n

US Attorney General Merrick Garland addressed the shooting in a press conference, saying state, federal, <\/span>and<\/span> local officials were investigating the case.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m devastated for the families who have been affected by this <\/span>terrible<\/span> tragedy,\u201d the top US Justice Department official said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Local television footage showed ambulances driving across a school field about two hours after the\u00a0attack\u00a0was first reported, and scores of vehicles parked around the school.<\/span><\/p>\n

A crowd of people was visible on the football field, with some gathered in a circle with their arms linked.<\/span><\/p>\n

This year, there have been at least 384 mass shootings\u2014defined as a shooting involving at least four victims, dead or wounded\u2014across the United States, according to the Gun Violence Archive.<\/span><\/p>\n
