TEHRAN: Iran\u2019s Foreign Ministry summoned the Afghan charg\u00e9 d\u2019affaires in Tehran after a Taliban official failed to stand for Iran\u2019s national anthem during a conference, days after a similar incident<\/a> in Pakistan.<\/p>\n

Pakistan condemned the disrespect of the national anthem by an Afghan diplomat who decided to remain seated when the anthem was played at a conference in Peshawar on Tuesday. The incident sparked an uproar on social and mainstream media.<\/p>\n

A similar incident occurred in Iran\u00a0when Azizurrahman Mansour, the Taliban\u2019s Deputy Minister of Hajj and Religious Affairs, remained seated during the playing of Iran\u2019s national anthem at the Islamic Unity Conference in Tehran on Thursday.<\/p>\n

An Iranian foreign ministry statement said a \u201cstrong protest\u201d had been lodged after the Afghan official\u2019s \u201cunconventional and unacceptable action\u201d.<\/p>\n

In response, Fazal Mohammad Haqqani, the Taliban\u2019s representative in Tehran, emphasized his country\u2019s respect for Iran, calling Mansour\u2019s behavior a \u201cpersonal action\u201d that did not reflect the official stance of the Taliban.<\/p>\n

He reiterated that the incident was not in line with the Taliban\u2019s views.<\/p>\n

Mansour later apologized in a video message, claiming that his decision to remain seated was based on Afghan traditions rather than intended disrespect. However, his explanation did little to quell criticism from Iranian officials.<\/p>\n

Hassan Kazemi Qomi, Iran\u2019s special envoy and ambassador to Afghanistan, denounced the act as \u201cmeaningless\u201d and criticized the justification.<\/p>\n

\u201cFailing to respect diplomatic norms under the pretext of Sharia law\u2019s prohibition of music makes no sense,\u201d Qomi tweeted, arguing that if music is forbidden, so too should be listening to it.<\/p>\n

The incident has added tension to the already delicate relationship between the two neighboring countries, which have had a series of diplomatic challenges since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in 2021.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
