{"id":49406,"date":"2024-09-22T15:40:55","date_gmt":"2024-09-22T10:40:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/?p=49406"},"modified":"2024-09-22T15:40:55","modified_gmt":"2024-09-22T10:40:55","slug":"coal-mine-blast-kills-more-than-50-in-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/world\/coal-mine-blast-kills-more-than-50-in-iran\/","title":{"rendered":"Coal mine blast kills more than 50 in Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">TEHRAN: A gas leak triggering an explosion at a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/pakistan\/coal-mine-explosion-in-darra-adam-khel-claims-three-lives\/\">coal mine<\/a> in Iran killed more than 50 workers and injured 20 others, state media reported Sunday, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in one of the country&#8217;s deadliest work\u00a0accidents\u00a0in years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> The Red Crescent said search and rescue operations are underway to retrieve workers still trapped beneath the rubble at some 250 <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">meters<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> below the surface.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;The number of dead workers increased to 51&#8221; in the explosion at the Tabas mine in eastern Iran, the official IRNA news agency reported, revising an earlier death toll of 30. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It added that 20 other people were injured.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The explosion occurred at around 9:00 pm (1730 GMT) on <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Saturday<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0when around 70 workers were present at the site in South Khorasan province, IRNA said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to the report, a leak of methane gas led to the blast in two blocks of the mine, which is owned by the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">private<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Iranian firm Madanjoo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">State TV broadcast footage of ambulances and helicopters arriving at Tabas to transport the injured to hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Online footage carried by IRNA showed the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">bodies<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> of some of the victims, wearing their work <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">uniforms<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, carried out of the site on mining carts. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">South Khorasan governor Javad Ghenaat told state TV that rescue teams were working to recover the remaining bodies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Iran&#8217;s President Masoud Pezeshkian, in remarks carried on\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">state<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> TV before departing for the UN General Assembly in New York, offered his condolences to the families of the victims and ordered a probe into the deadly incident.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;Unfortunately, we learned that an accident occurred in one of the coal mines in Tabas and a number of our compatriots lost their lives. I offer my condolences to their respected families,&#8221; Pezeshkian said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">His first vice president, Mohammad Reza Aref, spoke with cabinet members to ensure &#8220;emergency follow-up&#8221; and support for the victims and their families, IRNA said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Trapped<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Iran&#8217;s Red Crescent said search and rescue operations were underway in the mine, where some workers remained trapped.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to IRNA, they were about 250 <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">meters<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> (820 feet) below the surface, cut off from rescuers by chambers that had filled up with concentrated methane gas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;Gas accumulation in the mine&#8221; has made the search operations difficult, local prosecutor Ali Nesaei was quoted by IRNA as saying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;Currently, the priority is to provide aid to the injured and pull people from under the rubble,&#8221; Nesaei said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He added that &#8220;the negligence and fault of the relevant agents will be dealt with&#8221; later on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Last year, an explosion at a coal mine in the northern city of Damghan killed six people, also likely the result of a <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">methane<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> leak according to local media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In May 2021, two miners died in a collapse at the same site, local media reported at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A blast in 2017 killed 43 miners in Azad Shahr city in northern Iran, triggering anger toward Iranian authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mineral-rich Iran has around 1.5 billion tons of proven coal reserves, according to state media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Tabas mine covers an area of more than 30,000 square <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">kilometers<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> (nearly 11,600 square miles) and holds mass reserves of coking and thermal coal, according to IRNA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It is &#8220;considered the richest and largest coal area in Iran,&#8221; IRNA said.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TEHRAN: A gas leak triggering an explosion at a coal mine in Iran killed more than 50 workers and injured 20 others, state media reported Sunday, in one of the country&#8217;s deadliest work\u00a0accidents\u00a0in years.
