{"id":51592,"date":"2024-10-08T14:43:22","date_gmt":"2024-10-08T09:43:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/?p=51592"},"modified":"2024-10-08T14:43:22","modified_gmt":"2024-10-08T09:43:22","slug":"national-resilience-day-being-observed-today-to-pay-tribute-to-2005-earthquake-victims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/pakistan\/national-resilience-day-being-observed-today-to-pay-tribute-to-2005-earthquake-victims\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;National Resilience Day&#8217; being observed today to pay tribute to 2005 earthquake victims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ISLAMABAD: The 19th anniversary of the devastating October 8, 2005, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/pakistan\/earthquake-jolts-kp-khyber-district-residents-rush-outdoors-in-panic\/\">earthquake<\/a> \u2014 that killed thousands in northeast Pakistan \u2014 is being observed today (Tuesday) across the country with solemnity, respect, and renewed commitment to disaster preparedness.<\/p>\n<p>The day is being observed as <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/pakistan\/neoc-warns-of-potential-tropical-cyclone-which-may-hit-pakistans-coastal-areas\/\">National Resilience Day<\/a> to highlight the importance of preparedness and safety from natural disasters.<\/p>\n<p>The earthquake, which measured 7.6 on the Richter scale, left over 80,000 people dead and more than 100,000 injured, while causing widespread destruction to infrastructure across AJK, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and parts of northern Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>Across the country, the day began with special prayers during Fajr at mosques for the departed souls. Our heartfelt prayers go to all those who endured the loss of lives and properties,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The PM said Pakistan was facing an immense impact of climate change despite not being responsible for it. Frequent recurrence of unpredictable extreme events has given a devastating blow to our struggling economy.<\/p>\n<p>He commended the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of Pakistan for its hard work to have evolved a tested mechanism as a national response to such natural calamities.<\/p>\n<p>Shehbaz Sharif further expressed his satisfaction that NDMA\u2019s National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) had the best capacities in the management of national disasters. \u201cNEOC is founded on high-end technology inputs to create disasters\u2019 early warnings much ahead of time \u2013 saving lives and infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"td_block_wrap tdb_title tdi_13 tdb-single-title td-pb-border-top td_block_template_1\" data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_13\">\n<div class=\"tdb-block-inner td-fix-index\">\n<h2 class=\"tdb-title-text\">President calls for climate-resilient infrastructure<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>President Asif Ali Zardari has called for focusing on constructing climate-resilient infrastructure to mitigate the impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed the need to educate the people about disaster risk management, and mitigation, and actively engage the communities to promote a culture of disaster preparedness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday we are observing National Resilience Day, which reminds us of the devastating earthquake of October 8, 2005, that claimed thousands of lives\u201d, he said in a message on the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>The destruction it brought to our cities and villages remains etched in our memory. However, amid this catastrophe, our nation displayed an unparalleled spirit of resilience and unity and generously helped the affected people, the president said.<\/p>\n<p>He also extended his deepest gratitude to the international community, friendly countries, civil society, welfare, and charity organizations that extended their invaluable support in the aftermath of this earthquake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to equip our relevant institutions with the latest technologies, expertise, and resources to effectively respond to emerging challenges.\u201d\u00a0He stressed that improving early warning systems, enhancing coordination among national and provincial authorities, and adopting modern disaster mitigation strategies should be the key priorities to timely respond to threats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis National Resilience Day reminds us that the Pakistani nation has displayed extraordinary resilience in the face of challenges and has always emerged stronger.
