{"id":53824,"date":"2024-10-24T21:40:11","date_gmt":"2024-10-24T16:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/?p=53824"},"modified":"2024-10-24T23:12:15","modified_gmt":"2024-10-24T18:12:15","slug":"islamabad-rejects-un-human-rights-offices-remarks-on-26th-constitutional-amendment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/pakistan\/islamabad-rejects-un-human-rights-offices-remarks-on-26th-constitutional-amendment\/","title":{"rendered":"Islamabad &#8216;rejects&#8217; UN Human Rights office&#8217;s remarks on 26th Constitutional Amendment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ISLAMABAD: Islamabad rejected the United Nations Human Rights chief Volker T\u00fcrk&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/pakistan\/constitutional-amendments-undermine-judiciarys-independence-un-human-rights-commission\/\">statement<\/a> regarding the newly enacted 26th <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/featured\/constitutional-amendment-bill-became-law-following-president-zardaris-assent\/\">Constitutional Amendment<\/a>, labeling it as based on &#8220;misinformation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>During a weekly press briefing in Islamabad, the Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch asserted that the statement by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights was based on an inaccurate understanding and had drawn unwarranted and misplaced conclusions.<\/p>\n<p>Answering the question, the spokesperson said that the High Commissioner&#8217;s remarks were based on media reports, social media posts, and speculative analysis of a manifestly political nature.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We, therefore, reject baseless insinuations and advise the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to focus on actual and grave situations of human rights violations where either the international human rights law has been rendered ineffective or draconian laws have been enacted to oppress the illegally occupied peoples,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights\u00a0voiced concerns that the constitutional amendments\u00a0would seriously \u201cundermine\u201d the independence of the judiciary in Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the UN official said &#8220;latest constitutional amendments \u2013 \u201cadopted hastily\u201d, without broad consultation and debate \u2013 will seriously undermine the independence of the judiciary.&#8221; &#8220;Constitutional reforms must be in line with international human rights law,&#8221; the UN Human Rights office added.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Pakistan?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Pakistan<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/volker_turk?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@volker_turk<\/a> concerned that latest constitutional amendments \u2013 adopted hastily, without broad consultation and debate \u2013 will seriously undermine independence of the judiciary.<br \/>\nConstitutional reforms must be in line with international human rights law. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1WvDelniBV\">pic.twitter.com\/1WvDelniBV<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 UN Human Rights (@UNHumanRights) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UNHumanRights\/status\/1848710760395948141?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 22, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<div class=\"heading_H\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">When asked about the letter written by US Congressmen seeking PTI founder Imran Khan&#8217;s release, the spokesperson remarked that the comments on Pakistan&#8217;s domestic affairs are contrary to inter-state conduct and diplomatic norms.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Baloch added that Pakistan believes such letters and statements are counter-productive and not in line with the positive dynamics of Pakistan &#8211; US bilateral relations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These letters are also based on an incorrect understanding of the political situation in Pakistan. We hope that the US Congress will play a supportive role in strengthening Pakistan &#8211; US ties and focus on avenues of mutual collaboration that benefit both our peoples and countries,&#8221; a FO spokesperson said while responding to a query.<\/p>\n<p>During the press briefing, the spokesperson termed the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/pakistan\/us-blacklists-26-entities-for-supporting-pakistan-iran-weapons-programs\/\">blacklisting<\/a> of approximately two dozen companies by the United States (US) as &#8220;biased&#8221; and &#8220;politically motivated&#8221;. She noted that similar listings in the past were based on mere suspicion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is widely known that some countries while claiming strict adherence to Non-Proliferation norms, have conveniently waived licensing requirements for advanced military technologies to their favorite nations,&#8221; Mumtaz Zahra Baloch added.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson further said that such double standards and discriminatory practices undermine the credibility of the global Non-Proliferation regimes, increase military asymmetries, and endanger international peace and security.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Office spokesperson also confirmed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has written a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/pakistan\/pakistan-pins-letter-to-us-president-seeking-pardon-for-dr-aafia-siddiqui\/\">letter<\/a> to US President Joe Biden, requesting favorable consideration of Dr Aafia Siddiqui\u2019s mercy petition on humanity grounds.
