{"id":55038,"date":"2024-11-05T10:49:03","date_gmt":"2024-11-05T05:49:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/?p=55038"},"modified":"2024-11-05T10:49:03","modified_gmt":"2024-11-05T05:49:03","slug":"toxic-smog-chokes-indias-new-delhi-as-winter-nears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/world\/toxic-smog-chokes-indias-new-delhi-as-winter-nears\/","title":{"rendered":"Toxic smog chokes India&#8217;s New Delhi as winter nears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">NEW DELHI (Reuters): A toxic smog shrouded the Indian capital on Tuesday, driving <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/health\/lahore-smog-crisis-returns-air-pollution-level-soars-to-156\/\">air quality<\/a> in some areas into the &#8220;severe&#8221; range ahead of winter when cold air traps pollutants and brings a spike in respiratory illnesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The mix of smoke, emissions, and dust is an annual\u00a0problem\u00a0for authorities in New Delhi, with\u00a0vehicles, construction\u00a0dust, and smoke from farm fires in the adjoining northern states of Punjab and Haryana among the major contributors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;The outlook for the subsequent six days: the air quality is likely to be in the &#8216;very poor&#8217; to &#8216;severe&#8217; category,&#8221; said the Earth Sciences ministry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The city&#8217;s overall score on an air quality index kept by India&#8217;s top pollution authorities was &#8216;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">very poor<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8216; at 384, the ministry added, and was likely to stay there until Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">An index range of 401 to 500 falls into the &#8216;severe&#8217; category, implying it affects healthy people, but is more serious for those already fighting disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ministry data showed\u00a0farm fires\u00a0have increasingly swelled the pollution over the last three days, for a share of more than 23% on Monday, from about 15% on Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">About a third of the city&#8217;s 39 monitoring stations showed a &#8216;severe&#8217; score of more than 400 on Tuesday, said the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), well short of an air quality score of zero to 50 that it rates as &#8216;good&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Swiss group IQAir also rated Delhi the world&#8217;s second most polluted city on Tuesday, after Lahore in <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">neighbouring<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Pakistan, where authorities also took\u00a0emergency measures\u00a0in the wake of Sunday&#8217;s unprecedented pollution levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The government in Pakistan&#8217;s province of Punjab has blamed deteriorating air quality on pollution wafting in from India, an issue it has vowed to take up with its <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">neighbour<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> through the foreign ministry.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NEW DELHI (Reuters): A toxic smog shrouded the Indian capital on Tuesday, driving air quality in some areas into the &#8220;severe&#8221; range ahead of winter when cold air traps pollutants and brings a spike in respiratory illnesses.
