RAWALPINDI: The military courts have pardoned 19 convicts on humanitarian grounds<\/a> after they appealed for mercy in the May 9 sentences, the military’s media wing said on Thursday.<\/p>\n

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), a total of 67 convicts have given their mercy petitions, of which 48 petitions have been processed to Courts of Appeal, in accordance with the law.<\/p>\n

“Sequel to the promulgation of punishments to 9th May Tragedy convicts, they have exercised their right to appeal and have asked for mercy\/remission in their punishments,” the statement read.<\/p>\n

The ISPR confirmed that the remaining mercy petitions will be decided in due course of time, following the legal process.<\/p>\n

The 19 convicts, whose mercy appeal has been accepted, shall be released after the completion of procedural formalities, the statement read.<\/p>\n

Apart from that, the military issued the release of 20 convicts carried out on humanitarian grounds..<\/p>\n

“All those convicted retain the right of appeal and other legal remedies as per the law and the constitution,” the statement read.<\/p>\n
