{"id":61970,"date":"2025-01-09T20:57:51","date_gmt":"2025-01-09T15:57:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/?p=61970"},"modified":"2025-01-09T20:58:01","modified_gmt":"2025-01-09T15:58:01","slug":"electricity-prices-set-to-drop-by-rs10-12-per-unit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/pakistan\/electricity-prices-set-to-drop-by-rs10-12-per-unit\/","title":{"rendered":"Electricity prices set to drop by Rs10\u201312 per unit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Energy <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/pakistan\/china-approves-use-of-coal-in-three-pakistani-power-plants\/\">Owais Leghari<\/a> has revealed that renegotiations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are already reducing power prices, with further significant relief likely.<\/p>\n<p>Briefing the National Assembly\u2019s Power Committee, the federal minister said that power rates could be reduced by Rs10 to Rs12 per unit after the agreements are finalized.<\/p>\n<p>Leghari revealed that 75 percent of the cost of electricity comes from capacity charges levied by IPPs. \u201cThe impact of these contract revisions is being conveyed to the public,\u201d he said, adding that contracts with 12 IPPs have been reviewed, including bagasse-based plants, while negotiations have been completed for 15 more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cabinet will approve these amendments next week, while decisions regarding captive power plants will be taken within a month,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The minister also said that five IPP contracts have been terminated, and review approval has been given for eight bagasse power plants. Talks are underway with 16 additional IPPs, including government-owned plants. As a result of these talks, domestic consumers have already received a relief of Rs4 per unit in electricity tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing concerns over power theft in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Leghari accused the provincial government of failing to cooperate despite pre-existing agreements. He revealed that the KP Chief Minister had demanded unlimited power supply to feeders with high theft rates before removing illegal connections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe implemented the agreement for 75 days, yet the provincial administration failed to remove the hitches, resulting in an additional loss of Rs6 billion to our company,\u201d Leghari said.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/pakistan\/man-sues-k-electric-for-rs-20-million-over-fathers-death-due-to-loadshedding\/\">Loadshedding &amp; K-Electric Tariff<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The committee members expressed concern over the ongoing loadshedding in KP, which led to further discussions. Leghari criticized K-Electric\u2019s multi-year tariff as a heavy burden on consumers, saying, \u201cThe proposed tariff is unjustified in our opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the meeting, committee members Shehryar Mehar, Sher Ali Arbab and Junaid Akbar walked out over the proposal to resolve issues related to power supply companies in Hyderabad and Sukkur behind closed doors.<\/p>\n<p>The energy minister reiterated the government\u2019s commitment to reduce the financial burden on consumers through reforms in the energy sector, especially by removing inefficiencies and renegotiating contracts with IPPs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Energy Owais Leghari has revealed that renegotiations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are already reducing power prices, with further significant relief likely.
