ISLAMABAD: The Finance Committee has approved <\/span>increasing<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the salaries of MNAs<\/a> and senators, making their monthly pay up to\u00a0 <\/span>Rs519,000<\/span> \u00a0effective <\/span>from January 1, 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the Finance Committee<\/a>, the salaries of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly <\/span>would<\/span>\u00a0remain\u00a0<\/span>at Rs218,000 per month<\/span> as their <\/span>salaries could not be revised.<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier, a proposal was\u00a0 submitted to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif<\/a>, recommending that the salaries and benefits of lawmakers be aligned with those of a federal secretary.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>proposal was passed by the\u00a0<\/span>National Assembly’s finance committee\u00a0<\/span>before<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>being<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>forwarded to the prime minister by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq. The proposal suggested\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>fixed<\/span>\u00a0monthly salary and allowances\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span> MNAs and senators at Rs519,000, which are<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>equivalent to the\u00a0<\/span>federal<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>secretary’s monthly <\/span>salary and\u00a0<\/span>allowance<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>after deductions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Previously,<\/span>\u00a0demands to\u00a0<\/span>raise<\/span>\u00a0the monthly salaries to Rs1 million were rejected by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq. <\/span><\/p>\n

However, the current initiative has gained support from various parties, including the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and others, who argue that there should be parity between lawmakers and high-ranking federal officials.<\/span><\/p>\n

Notably, 67 lawmakers from the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) also submitted written requests advocating for a salary hike.<\/span><\/p>\n

The finance committee has also proposed extending federal secretary-level benefits and facilities to parliamentarians.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently, the monthly salary and benefits of lawmakers amount to Rs218,000, which is significantly lower than the proposed amount of Rs519,000.
