{"id":68814,"date":"2025-03-23T13:08:26","date_gmt":"2025-03-23T08:08:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/?p=68814"},"modified":"2025-03-23T13:08:26","modified_gmt":"2025-03-23T08:08:26","slug":"polio-virus-found-in-sewage-sample-of-18-districts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/health\/polio-virus-found-in-sewage-sample-of-18-districts\/","title":{"rendered":"Polio virus found in sewage sample of 18 districts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LAHORE: Pakistan&#8217;s <span class=\"diff-highlight\">efforts<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">toward<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/health\/polio-virus-detected-in-sewage-samples-of-14-districts-across-country\/\"> polio <span class=\"diff-highlight\">eradication<\/span> <\/a><span class=\"diff-highlight\">have<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">been<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">hampered<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">after<\/span> the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication <span class=\"diff-highlight\">confirmed<\/span> the presence of poliovirus in <span class=\"diff-highlight\">the<\/span> sewerage <span class=\"diff-highlight\">systems<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">of<\/span> 18 districts <span class=\"diff-highlight\">across<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">the<\/span> four provinces <span class=\"diff-highlight\">of<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">the<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">country<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The National Emergency Operations Centre for Polio <span class=\"diff-highlight\">reported<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">the<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">identification<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/health\/nih-confirms-polio-virus-in-sewage-lines-across-all-four-provinces-of-pakistan\/\">Wild Poliovirus Type 1<\/a> in environmental samples <span class=\"diff-highlight\">taken<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">from<\/span> February 21 <span class=\"diff-highlight\">to<\/span> March 6.<\/p>\n<p>The <span class=\"diff-highlight\">18<\/span> districts <span class=\"diff-highlight\">affected<\/span> include 12 <span class=\"diff-highlight\">districts<\/span> in Sindh <span class=\"diff-highlight\">province<\/span>, two in Punjab <span class=\"diff-highlight\">province<\/span>, <span class=\"diff-highlight\">one<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">district<\/span> in <span class=\"diff-highlight\">Islamabad<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">Capital<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">Territory<\/span>, and <span class=\"diff-highlight\">two<\/span> in <span class=\"diff-highlight\">Khyber<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">Pakhtunkhwa<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">province<\/span><span class=\"diff-highlight\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"diff-highlight\">Polio<\/span>-positive sewage was found in Islamabad, Chaman, South Waziristan, Lower <span class=\"diff-highlight\">Dir<\/span><span class=\"diff-highlight\">,<\/span> Upper Dir, <span class=\"diff-highlight\">and<\/span> Lahore <span class=\"diff-highlight\">in<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">addition<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">to<\/span> Dera Ghazi Khan and districts in Sindh including Badin, Dadu, and Hyderabad.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"diff-highlight\">This<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">is<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">concerning<\/span><span class=\"diff-highlight\">,<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">given<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">the<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">six<\/span> reported polio <span class=\"diff-highlight\">cases<\/span> this year <span class=\"diff-highlight\">(<\/span>four in Sindh<span class=\"diff-highlight\">,<\/span> and one each in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab<span class=\"diff-highlight\">)<\/span>. In 2024, 74 polio cases <span class=\"diff-highlight\">were<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">recorded<\/span> <span class=\"diff-highlight\">(<\/span><span class=\"diff-highlight\">27<\/span> in Balochistan, 22 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and 23 in Sindh<span class=\"diff-highlight\">)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Polio is a highly infectious disease that can cause paralysis and even death.
