ISLAMABAD: The government of Pakistan has announced plans to refund excess payments <\/a>made by electricity consumers, which is expected to reduce electricity costs by 30 paisas per unit.<\/p>\n

This decision<\/span> follows<\/span> the Central Power Purchasing Agency<\/a> (CPPA) filing<\/span> for<\/span> next<\/span> month<\/span>‘<\/span>s<\/span> Adjustments<\/span> to<\/span> Fuel<\/span> Charging<\/span> (<\/span>FAC<\/span>)<\/span> to<\/span> consider<\/span> monthly<\/span> price changes<\/span> for February.<\/p>\n

The<\/span> CPPA<\/span> stated<\/span> that<\/span> a total of 6.495 billion units were<\/span> bought<\/span> for<\/span> electricity<\/span> generation<\/span> in February, at<\/span> a unit<\/span> cost of Rs 8.22. The<\/span> electricity generation mix was<\/span> 27.12% hydropower<\/span>, 15.02% indigenous<\/span> coal, 1.56% imported coal, 10.32% gas, 14.11% imported liquefied<\/span> natural<\/span> gas<\/span> <\/a>(<\/span>LNG)<\/span>, and 26.59% nuclear fuel in<\/span> February<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

NEPRA is expected<\/span> to listen<\/span> to<\/span> CPPA’s petition for<\/span> the<\/span> adjustment<\/span> of<\/span> monthly<\/span> price<\/span> changes<\/span>, which could<\/span> lead to consumers<\/span> engaging<\/span> in tariff<\/span> modification<\/span> since<\/span> NEPRA is<\/span> the price<\/span> regulator<\/span> for<\/span> this<\/span> marketplace<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

NEPRA<\/span> previously<\/span> announced<\/span> a<\/span> power tariff cut<\/span> of<\/span> up to Rs3 per unit for<\/span> fuel<\/span> charge<\/span> adjustment<\/span>,<\/span> which<\/span> provided<\/span> customers<\/span> with<\/span> the<\/span> price<\/span> cut<\/span> as<\/span> a<\/span> reflection<\/span> of<\/span> that<\/span> overcharge<\/span>, allowing<\/span> for<\/span> refunds<\/span> for the<\/span> Discos’ customers<\/span> for January 2025 and KE for<\/span> its<\/span> users for<\/span> December 2024.<\/p>\n

The Fuel Charge Adjustments are made to acknowledge<\/span> shifts<\/span> in global fuel prices and generation mix, with NEPRA examining<\/span> and adjusting<\/span> these costs downward<\/span>,<\/span> and<\/span> checking<\/span> that<\/span> the<\/span> price<\/span> impacts<\/span> are<\/span> passed<\/span> onto<\/span> consumers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
