KARACHI: There<\/span> are<\/span> alarming<\/span> indications<\/span> of<\/span> the emergence<\/span> of poliovirus in<\/span> Pakistan<\/span>,<\/span> as<\/span> environmental testing has<\/span> now<\/span> proven<\/span> that<\/span> the<\/span> Wild Poliovirus Type 1<\/a> \u00a0(WPV1) is<\/span> present<\/span> in 25 sewage samples collected<\/span> from<\/span> 20 districts.<\/span><\/p>\n

The samples collected from<\/span> 5 to<\/span> 19 March<\/span> represented<\/span> contamination of<\/span> the<\/span> wastewater<\/span> in three provinces: Balochistan, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0 Balochistan, several areas were tested positive including Quetta, Kech, Khuzdar, Lasbela, Pishin, Loralai, Dakki, Naseerabad, including<\/span> Osta Muhammad.<\/p>\n

In Punjab: Lahore, Multan, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, D.G.Khan and Rahim Yar Khan resulted in positive polio virus.<\/p>\n

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Peshawar, Bannu, Kohat, Lakki Marwat, South Waziristan, and Lower Dir. This<\/span> is<\/span> the 13th detection<\/span> of the<\/span> poliovirus<\/span> in environmental samples this year, and<\/span> there<\/span> are<\/span> over 150 positive samples already<\/span> reported<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Yet<\/span>, there<\/span> are<\/span> 35 sewage samples<\/a> reported<\/span> from 31 districts that<\/span> were<\/span> found<\/span> to<\/span> be<\/span> negative for the virus. So<\/span> far<\/span> this<\/span> year<\/span>,<\/span> Pakistan has reported six confirmed polio cases (<\/span>in 2025),<\/span> four of<\/span> which<\/span> were<\/span> reported<\/span> in Sindh and<\/span> a recent case reported<\/span> from<\/span> Thatta.<\/p>\n

In 2024, Pakistan<\/span> reported a<\/span> total<\/span> of<\/span> 74 polio cases. \u00b9The discovery<\/span> of the<\/span> poliovirus in sewage is<\/span> a<\/span> reminder<\/span> for continued vigilance and a<\/span> need<\/span> for<\/span> vaccination<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Health experts emphasize that vaccination is the most effective way to protect children from this<\/span> debilitating<\/span> disease. Given that the poliovirus<\/span> is<\/span> present<\/span> in<\/span> Pakistan and Afghanistan, health officials encourage<\/span> cross-border collaboration<\/span> for<\/span> the<\/span> eradication<\/span> of<\/span> polio.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
