Vatican City (REUTERS): Cardinals gathered at the Vatican on Tuesday to plan Pope Francis<\/a>\u2019 funeral, which leaders from around the world will attend ahead of a conclave next month to elect a new head of the Roman Catholic Church.<\/a><\/p>\n

Francis, 88,\u00a0died\u00a0unexpectedly on Monday after suffering a stroke and cardiac arrest, the Vatican said, ending an often turbulent reign in which he repeatedly clashed with traditionalists and championed the poor and marginalised.<\/p>\n

The pontiff spent five weeks in hospital earlier this year suffering from double pneumonia. But he returned to the Vatican almost a month ago and had seemed to be recovering, appearing in St. Peter\u2019s Square on Easter Sunday.<\/p>\n

The Vatican on Tuesday released photographs of Francis dressed in his vestments and lying in a wooden coffin in the chapel of the Santa Marta residence, where he lived during his 12-year papacy. Swiss Guards stand on either side of the casket.<\/p>\n

His sudden death set in motion ancient rituals, as the 1.4-billion-member Church started the transition from one pope to another, including the breaking of the pope\u2019s \u201cFisherman\u2019s Ring\u201d and lead seal, used in his lifetime to seal documents, so they cannot be used by anyone else.<\/p>\n

All cardinals currently in Rome were invited to meet at the Vatican at 9 am (noon PKT), where they were expected to make funeral plans.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are now called on to discuss the organisation. We\u2019ll see what comes\u00a0next,\u201d said Italian Cardinal Fernando Filoni as he entered the first Congregation of Cardinals at the Vatican.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most important thing is prayer. Let us accompany the pope with our prayers,\u201d Filoni told reporters.<\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump, who clashed repeatedly with the pope about immigration, said he and his wife would fly to Rome for his funeral. Among other heads of state set to\u00a0attend\u00a0were Javier Milei, president of Francis\u2019 native Argentina and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to a source in his office.<\/p>\n

The Vatican has said it expected the ceremony to take place on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.<\/p>\n

In a break from tradition, Francis confirmed in his final testament released on Monday that he wished to be\u00a0buried\u00a0in Rome\u2019s Basilica of Saint Mary Major and not St Peter\u2019s Basilica.<\/p>\n

The gathering of cardinals will also review the day-to-day running of the Church in the period before a new pope is elected.<\/p>\n

A conclave to choose a new pope normally takes place 15 to 20 days after the death of a pontiff, meaning it should not start before May 6.<\/p>\n

Some 135 cardinals are\u00a0eligible to participate in the highly secretive ballot that can stretch over days. At present, there is no clear frontrunner to succeed Francis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
