KARACHI: Authorities in Karachi are continuing<\/span> their<\/span> investigation<\/span> into<\/span> a deep well found<\/span> next<\/span> to<\/span> the Malir River Dam, which<\/span> is<\/span> believed<\/span> to<\/span> have<\/span> been<\/span> dug<\/span> to<\/span> steal<\/span> oil or gas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The site<\/span> contained gas cylinders and connection gear<\/span>, raising questions<\/span> about illegal activity<\/span> in the vicinity<\/span>. Reports<\/span> from<\/span> police<\/span> indicate<\/span> the<\/span> possibility<\/span> of<\/span> a<\/span> body<\/span> inside<\/span> the well, but efforts<\/span> to<\/span> rescue the<\/span> body<\/span> have<\/span> not<\/span> proceeded<\/span> due to gas levels.<\/p>\n

First<\/span> responders<\/span> have<\/span> difficulty<\/span> entering the well, and representatives from Pak-Arab Refinery Company Limited<\/a> (PARCO) and Sui Southern Gas Company are also<\/span> present<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Officials<\/span> from<\/span> PARCO said<\/span> the<\/span> gas line was<\/span> located far away<\/span> from the plot,<\/span> said<\/span> to<\/span> be<\/span> where<\/span> the well<\/span> was<\/span> located,<\/span> and<\/span> two<\/span> vehicles<\/span> and<\/span> a<\/span> motorcycle<\/span> were<\/span> identified<\/span> near<\/span> the plot<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The colleagues contacted the<\/span> emergency services after failing to recover<\/span> the body and departed<\/span> the scene. Further<\/span> investigation will<\/span> follow<\/span> regarding<\/span> the circumstances around<\/span> the incident. Police say they<\/span> will be able<\/span> to<\/span> assist<\/span> with<\/span> rescue<\/span> efforts<\/span> only<\/span> once<\/span> the gas to<\/span> the<\/span> line<\/span> is shut off.<\/p>\n

Gas theft is<\/span> a serious<\/span> problem<\/span> in Pakistan, which has been<\/span> experiencing<\/span> endless<\/span> energy crises for decades.
