WASHINGTON (Reuters): US Vice President JD Vance said that Washington hoped that India\u2019s response to the recent attack in occupied Kashmir would not lead to a broader regional conflict.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0April 22 attack\u00a0in occupied Kashmir\u2019s Pahalgam killed\u00a026 people, mostly tourists, marking one of the deadliest assaults in the region since 2000. India has implied cross-border links without evidence, while Pakistan\u2019s\u00a0civilian\u00a0and military leadership have\u00a0rejected\u00a0the accusation and called for a\u00a0neutral probe.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur hope here is that India responds to this terrorist attack in a way that doesn\u2019t lead to a broader regional conflict,\u201d Vance said in an\u00a0interview\u00a0on\u00a0Fox News<\/em>\u2019 \u2018Special Report with Bret Baier\u2019 show.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd we hope, frankly, that Pakistan, to the extent that they\u2019re responsible, cooperates with India to make sure that the terrorists sometimes operating in their territory are hunted down and dealt with,\u201d Vance added.<\/p>\n Top US leaders, including President Donald Trump, have condemned the attack, calling it \u201cterror\u201d and \u201cunconscionable,\u201d while expressing support for India without directly blaming Pakistan.<\/p>\n India is an important US partner as Washington aims to counter China\u2019s rising influence. Pakistan remains Washington\u2019s ally even as its importance diminished after the 2021 US\u00a0withdrawal\u00a0from neighbouring Afghanistan.<\/p>\n In recent days, Washington\u00a0urged\u00a0India and Pakistan to work with each other to de-escalate tensions and arrive at a \u201cresponsible solution.\u201d India has blamed Pakistan for the attack. Islamabad denies responsibility and is calling for a neutral probe.<\/p>\n The US State Department has said it was in touch with the nuclear-armed neighbours at multiple levels and Secretary of State Marco Rubio held calls on Wednesday with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.<\/p>\n \u201cThis government is in constant communication,\u201d State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce told reporters at her daily news briefing<\/p>\n \u201cWe are asking for a responsible resolution from both parties.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAs the President articulated to Prime Minister Modi last week, the US stands strong with India against terrorism, and Prime Minister Modi has our full support,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Bruce said Secretary Rubio encouraged both countries to work toward a responsible solution that maintains long-term peace and regional stability in South Asia.<\/p>\n \u201cWe continue to be in touch with the governments of both countries, as I mentioned, at multiple levels.\u201d<\/p>\n Hindu nationalist Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u00a0vowed to punish those responsible, and Jaishankar has told Rubio that the perpetrators should be brought to justice. Pakistan says military action by India was imminent.<\/p>\n After the attack, India\u00a0suspended\u00a0the Indus Water Treaty, and both countries\u00a0closed airspace\u00a0to each other\u2019s airlines.
