KARACHI: As<\/span> the<\/span> heat<\/span> increases<\/span> in<\/span> Karachi<\/span>,<\/span> there<\/span> has<\/span> been<\/span> a<\/span> rise<\/span> in cases of food poisoning<\/a>, intestinal infections,<\/span> and other stomach–<\/span>related<\/span> diseases, negatively<\/span> impacting<\/span> the health of people<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Watermelon<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> which<\/span> is<\/span> consumed more<\/span> than<\/span> any<\/span> other<\/span> summer fruit<\/span>, is<\/span> the<\/span> main<\/span> culprit<\/span>. Although<\/span> it is considered a healthy<\/span> fruit, during the<\/span> onslaught<\/span> of<\/span> summer heat, some<\/span> people<\/span> are now presenting<\/span> in<\/span> the\u00a0hospital<\/span> with<\/span> food<\/span> poisoning,<\/span> and<\/span> people<\/span> are now<\/span> contracting cholera,<\/span> all<\/span> after eating watermelon<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Dr Irfan Siddiqui of<\/span> Jinnah Hospital explained <\/span>the reasons behind the<\/span> increase in diseases: “Seasonal fruits are artificially<\/span> injected to make them thick. We<\/span> are using<\/span> cosmetic<\/span> injections<\/span> on them.”<\/p>\n

He noted<\/span> that chemicals are also being added to these fruits. To<\/span> safeguard<\/span> against<\/span> illness<\/span>, he said,<\/span> “Don’t\u00a0freeze<\/span> fruits<\/span>, store<\/span> them<\/span> in the refrigerator<\/span>, and don<\/span>‘<\/span>t<\/span> eat<\/span> them in<\/span> excess<\/span>.”<\/p>\n

People should allow<\/span> their stomachs a gap after eating these fruits, were<\/span> his<\/span> words<\/span>. The<\/span> doctor<\/span> stated<\/span> that<\/span> since<\/span> the<\/span> preventive<\/span> measures<\/span> were not taken, it<\/span> was<\/span> observed<\/span> that<\/span> the<\/span> patient<\/span> has weight increased<\/span> by<\/span> 15% to 20%.<\/p>\n

He also advised\u00a0that prevention is the only way<\/span> against gastro infections and vomiting. Last week, the Pakistan Meteorological Department stated<\/span> that scorching<\/span> heat<\/span> in Karachi and other areas<\/span> of Sindh will<\/span> not<\/span> show<\/span> unusual<\/span> behavior<\/span>,<\/span> which<\/span> only<\/span> adds<\/span> to the discomfort.<\/p>\n

Since then, the coastal<\/span> city has been\u00a0in scorching<\/span> heat, particularly<\/span>\u00a0between<\/span> 11<\/span> am<\/span> and<\/span> 4<\/span> pm<\/span>. The higher authorities advised the<\/span> citizens that<\/span> during<\/span> this<\/span> time,<\/span> no<\/span> one<\/span> should<\/span> go<\/span> out<\/span> without<\/span> any<\/span> necessity<\/span> to prevent medical emergencies from<\/span> the<\/span> heat<\/span>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
