ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has called<\/span> on<\/span> the United Nations Security Council<\/a> (UNSC) to take action<\/span> to defuse<\/span> tensions in South Asia for global and regional peace.<\/p>\n

Pakistan Permanent Representative Asim Iftikhar, while addressing the press<\/span> after the special meeting<\/span> of the UN Security Council<\/span> in New York, said Indian actions<\/span> are threatening<\/span> peace and stability in the region, and dialogue is the only way out<\/span>.<\/p>\n

He said Kashmir is a long–<\/span>standing issue<\/span> between Pakistan and India, and the<\/span> issues<\/span> remain<\/span> unresolved<\/span> decades<\/span> later<\/span>,<\/span> 70 years to<\/span> be<\/span> exact<\/span>. He said the atrocities<\/span> of<\/span> Indian occupiers<\/span> against innocent and oppressed Kashmiris<\/a> continue unabated.<\/p>\n

Asim Iftikhar told Council members that Pakistan is prepared<\/span> to cooperate<\/span> in any fact<\/span>–<\/span>finding,<\/span> impartial,<\/span> and independent<\/span> investigation into the Pahalgam incident.<\/p>\n

Talking<\/span> to<\/span> journalists after<\/span> speaking<\/span> to<\/span> the Security Council, Guterres expressed deep concern at<\/span> the worsening<\/span> state<\/span> of<\/span> relations<\/span>, which<\/span> he<\/span> said<\/span> had reached sustainable<\/span> \u201chigh that<\/span> they<\/span> had not\u00a0reached<\/span> their highest in a year<\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n

He repeated<\/span> his condemnation of the 22 April terror attack in the Pahalgam area of Jammu and Kashmir, which killed at least 26 civilians and injured many others<\/span>.<\/p>\n

“<\/span>Attacking<\/span> civilians is not<\/span> acceptable<\/span> –<\/span> and those responsible need<\/span> to<\/span> be<\/span> held<\/span> accountable<\/span> through credible and lawful methods<\/span>,“<\/span> the UN chief said.<\/p>\n
