LAHORE: A concerning situation has unfloaded along the Chenab River<\/a> due to India’s abrupt release of a high volume of water after halting the water flow for nearly a day.<\/p>\n

The sudden surge in the water flow levels has alerted the authorities to threats of potential floods in areas near to Chenab River. Pakistan‘<\/span>s irrigation officials said<\/span> the<\/span> flow of<\/span> water<\/span> at Head Marala jumped<\/span> to 28,000 cusecs when<\/span> only<\/span> hours earlier<\/span> the river was<\/span> nearly dry<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The officials<\/span> stated<\/span> that<\/span> the<\/span> unanticipated<\/span> release of<\/span> water caused a sudden raise in water\u00a0levels<\/span> that<\/span> then<\/span> warranted<\/span> local authorities to take<\/span> action<\/span> and<\/span> notify<\/span> flood alerts<\/a> in local<\/span> communities<\/span> of Sialkot, Gujrat, and Head Qadirabad.<\/p>\n

Earlier reports had indicated that<\/span> the<\/span> flow<\/span> of<\/span> water at Head Marala was<\/span> at<\/span> a<\/span> very<\/span> low<\/span> 5,300 cusecs as<\/span> India purposely<\/span> blocked that<\/span> stream at<\/span> the Baglihar Dam.<\/p>\n

The sudden swings<\/span> in<\/span> water<\/span> volume<\/span> created<\/span> serious concerns for<\/span> India‘<\/span>s water practices, with experts indicating<\/span> risks<\/span> for<\/span> flash<\/span>–<\/span>flooding\u00a0and violations<\/span> of the Indus Waters Treaty<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Authorities in the<\/span> occupied territories<\/span> of<\/span> Jammu and Kashmir issued<\/span> alerts<\/span> for<\/span> the<\/span> communities<\/span> of<\/span> Akhnoor and<\/span> ordered<\/span> evacuations<\/span> of<\/span> concerned<\/span> residents along<\/span> riverbanks<\/span>,<\/span> fearing surges<\/span> in<\/span> flows<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The Indus River System Authority (IRSA) has established<\/span> real-time monitoring of inflows and outflows of<\/span> the<\/span> Chenab<\/span> so<\/span> it<\/span> can<\/span> properly<\/span> monitor<\/span> what<\/span> is<\/span> taking<\/span> place<\/span> around<\/span> water<\/span> flows<\/span> of<\/span> the river<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Officials have<\/span> said<\/span> inflows<\/span> of<\/span> water at<\/span> the<\/span> river<\/span> may continue to remain<\/span> altered<\/span> for<\/span> a while,<\/span> given<\/span> India‘<\/span>s erratic and politically motivated water withdrawals<\/span>.
