ISLAMABAD: On<\/span> Tuesday<\/span>,<\/span> Deputy Prime Minister<\/a>\/Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, warned that the ceasefire agreement<\/span> between Pakistan and India could be jeopardised<\/span> if the water dispute with<\/span> India regarding<\/span> the<\/span> suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty is not resolved.<\/p>\n

In an interview with CNN, Ishaq Dar stated<\/span> that \u201c<\/span>we<\/span> had no intention of using<\/span> nuclear weapons against India,\u201d<\/span> stating<\/span> that the<\/span> retaliatory operations<\/span> carried<\/span> out<\/span> by<\/span> Islamabad<\/span> on<\/span> 7<\/span> May<\/span> were<\/span> \u201c<\/span>self-defensive<\/span>\u201d<\/span> in<\/span> nature,<\/span> which<\/span> came<\/span> following<\/span> cross-border unprovoked<\/span> strikes<\/span> by<\/span> India<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ishaq<\/span> Dar<\/span> described India\u2019s operation against Pakistan as a \u201cwar\u201d and \u201c<\/span>a wishful attempt to impose<\/span> its hegemony\u201d in the long-disputed Kashmir region, but<\/span> stated firmly<\/span> that \u201cthe nuclear option was never on the table.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI<\/span> mean<\/span>,<\/span> there<\/span> are certain times where<\/span> you have to make<\/span> very difficult<\/span> decisions,\u201d he stated<\/span>, \u201cwe<\/span> were very confident<\/span> that our conventional capacity and capabilities are considerably<\/span> strong enough that we will beat them both in the air and on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although<\/span> the ceasefire has held in<\/span> the<\/span> meantime, Dar cautioned that there<\/span> have<\/span> been<\/span> no<\/span> comprehensive negotiations between<\/span> the two sides. \u201cWe still hope sense will prevail,\u201d he stated<\/span>.<\/p>\n

When asked about<\/span> the<\/span> motivations<\/span> behind<\/span> the ceasefire, Ishaq Dar told CNN,<\/span> “<\/span>It‘<\/span>s<\/span> in everyone<\/span>‘<\/span>s<\/span> interest to not delay or allow<\/span> such issues to<\/span> go<\/span> beyond a reasonable time.\u00a0The Indians had seen what happened in the sky \u2013<\/span> They could see how serious the damage was.<\/p>\n

“<\/span> In<\/span> contradiction<\/span> to<\/span> earlier statements<\/span> made by India\u2019s Director General of Military Operations, Dar said there was no direct communication<\/span> between Indian or Pakistani officials regarding<\/span> a<\/span> ceasefire. Dar stated<\/span> that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio sent<\/span> a<\/span> message that India was prepared<\/span> to stop fighting.<\/p>\n

Dar stated<\/span> that Pakistan was looking for<\/span> a<\/span> meaningful<\/span> way<\/span> forward in<\/span> establishing a path for long-term peace and security and<\/span> aims<\/span> to<\/span> provide “<\/span>dignity for both sides.“<\/span> Dar<\/span> stated<\/span> that<\/span> Kashmir is<\/span> “<\/span>the root cause of regional instability.<\/span>“<\/span> And<\/span> he<\/span> called for a<\/span> “<\/span>future self-determination for<\/span> the<\/span> region<\/span>.<\/p>\n

“<\/span> He reiterated Pakistan‘<\/span>s condemnation of terrorism “<\/span>in all its<\/span> forms and manifestations,<\/span>\u00a0and rejected<\/span> any claim<\/span> of<\/span> Pakistani involvement in the<\/span> Pahalgam attack. Dar acknowledged<\/span> US<\/span> support, noting<\/span> that<\/span> President Donald Trump supports Pakistan‘<\/span>s anti<\/span>–<\/span>terrorism<\/span> efforts.<\/p>\n

Dar<\/span>,<\/span> while<\/span> alluding<\/span> to<\/span> Trump<\/span>‘<\/span>s<\/span> social<\/span> media<\/span> post<\/span> over<\/span> \u201cfinding<\/span> a<\/span> solution<\/span> to<\/span> the<\/span> Kashmir<\/span> conflict<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> said<\/span>,<\/span> “<\/span>if<\/span> they (<\/span>the<\/span> US<\/span> officials<\/span>)<\/span> didn\u2019t believe (in our efforts), they would not have cooperated the way (that they did).<\/span><\/p>\n

“<\/span> Dar warned<\/span> that<\/span> the<\/span> ceasefire<\/span>,<\/span> already<\/span> tenuous<\/span>,<\/span> could<\/span> be<\/span> in<\/span> jeopardy<\/span> by<\/span> the water<\/span> issue<\/span> as<\/span> a<\/span> result<\/span> of<\/span> the bilateral<\/span> suspension<\/span> of<\/span> the Indus<\/span> Waters<\/span> Treaty<\/span> by<\/span> India<\/span> in<\/span> the wake<\/span> of<\/span> the latest<\/span> tensions<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Dar<\/span> said<\/span> that Pakistan‘<\/span>s position is clear,<\/span> which<\/span> is<\/span> to reverse\u00a0India<\/span>‘<\/span>s<\/span> unilateral<\/span> suspension of the treaty.
