ISLAMABAD: In a move to curb tax evasion, the Prime Minister<\/a> has ordered<\/span> action<\/span> on<\/span> the<\/span> situation<\/span> regarding<\/span> government<\/span> officials who are engaged<\/span> in<\/span> facilitating<\/span> tax evasion in the tobacco industry<\/span>.<\/p>\n

His<\/span> orders come on<\/span> the<\/span> heels<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> recent reporting<\/span> of fake cigarette production at<\/span> a factory<\/span> sealed up<\/span> last<\/span> year<\/span> in Jalalpur Pirwala, Multan.<\/p>\n

Despite being sealed by the Federal Board of Revenue<\/a> (FBR) last year, the factory continued to manufacture fake cigarettes, causing tax losses of crores of rupees.<\/p>\n

According<\/span> to<\/span> reports<\/span>,<\/span> the owners of the factory are<\/span> close to<\/span> political powers<\/span> in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. On March 28, the police raided the factory and arrested two people, recovering a large amount<\/span> of fake cigarettes.<\/p>\n

However, the<\/span> reports<\/span> claim that the production of fake cigarettes continued even after the police raid<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The situation<\/span> demonstrates<\/span> the government’s inability<\/span> to stop tax evasion in the tobacco industry<\/span>, with sources more<\/span> or<\/span> less<\/span> blaming<\/span> political influence and corrupt<\/span> department<\/span> officials<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The FBR’s failure<\/span> to collect taxes has resulted in huge<\/span> amounts<\/span> of<\/span> tax<\/span> revenue losses. The Prime Minister has directed<\/span> officials engaging<\/span> in<\/span> tax<\/span> evasion<\/span> to be held<\/span> to<\/span> account<\/span>. The PM’s directives<\/span> are<\/span> meant<\/span> to increase<\/span> transparency<\/span> and accountability<\/span> in the tax collection process.<\/p>\n

If<\/span> the<\/span> government<\/span> is<\/span> to<\/span> create<\/span> tax revenue in the tobacco sector, it<\/span> must<\/span> work<\/span> with provinces to put<\/span> in<\/span> place<\/span> mechanisms for<\/span> successful<\/span> revenue<\/span> collection<\/span>.
