{"id":75973,"date":"2025-05-29T19:26:22","date_gmt":"2025-05-29T14:26:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/?p=75973"},"modified":"2025-05-29T19:26:22","modified_gmt":"2025-05-29T14:26:22","slug":"unicef-teams-up-with-saba-qamar-to-combat-child-marriage-in-pakistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/pakistan\/unicef-teams-up-with-saba-qamar-to-combat-child-marriage-in-pakistan\/","title":{"rendered":"UNICEF teams up with Saba Qamar to combat child marriage in Pakistan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ISLAMABAD:\u00a0 In a major initiative against Child marriages in Pakistan, the United Nations Children\u2019s Fund <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/pakistan\/balochistans-14-year-old-zunaira-baloch-named-unicef-youth-climate-advocate\/\">(UNICEF)<\/a> has started an awareness campaign and joined hands with Pakistan&#8217;s film Filmstar saba Qamar, who is also UNICEF\u2019s National Ambassador.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/life-style\/saba-qamar-marks-41st-birthday-with-a-quiet-and-intimate-celebration\/\">Saba Qamar<\/a>, in a video message as part of the campaign, underlines the impact of early marriage of girls on their future, including education, health, and future endeavors.<\/p>\n<p>She also calls on the public to speak up against the early marriages of girls and emphasizes the protection of children&#8217;s rights.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">\n<div id=\"div-ub-dailypakistan.com.pk_1689057861141\">\u201cWhy should a child be pushed into a marriage and a life they didn\u2019t choose?\u201d she questioned. \u201cLast year in Sujawal, Sindh, I met a brave 14-year-old girl named Anam Nazir who prevented three child marriages in her area. That experience showed me the power of awareness and community action.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019m proud to stand with this cause and raise my voice for those girls \u2014 and sometimes boys \u2014 who silently suffer because of this harmful practice&#8221;, she said.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cMiss Qamar is a powerful advocate for children,\u201d said Abdullah Fadil, a UNICEF representative in Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are proud to work with her to shine a light on the challenges too many children face, and to accelerate progress toward a future where every child \u2014 especially every girl \u2014 can learn, grow, and thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>Pakistan has almost 19 million girls married before they turn 18, making it the sixth-largest country in the world for child brides. Almost 50% of these females become mothers while still underage, putting their health at significant risk.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Additionally impacted are educational outcomes: just 13% of married females finish secondary school, whereas 44% of unmarried girls do so.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In line with the province of Sindh, Unicef applauded the recent decision by the Islamabad Capital Territory to raise the legal marriage age to 18.
