ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP<\/a>) has started implementing the recent Supreme Court verdict on reserved seats, which had set aside the July 12 verdict and upheld the Peshawar High Court verdict.<\/p>\n

According to sources, the ECP has received the written order of the Supreme Court and its legal team has started a detailed review of the verdict.<\/p>\n

The sources said that the ECP is expected to issue a formal notification of the redistribution of reserved seats by tomorrow. Once issued, the ruling alliance will regain its two-thirds majority in the National Assembly. The announcement will be based on a comprehensive report prepared by the ECP\u2019s legal team.<\/p>\n

The 13-member larger bench of the Supreme Court has set aside the July 12, 2024 verdict and allowed all review petitions related to the allocation of reserved seats. As a result, the Sunni Ittehad Council lost its claim to all reserved seats, which are now being given to the parties in the ruling alliance.<\/p>\n

The verdict said that all civil review petitions have been granted, disqualifying the PTI from 22 reserved seats in the National Assembly and 55 in the provincial assemblies. Along with this, the membership of 77 lawmakers has also been restored.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Detailed breakdown of seat restoration across assemblies<\/h2>\n

In the Punjab Assembly, 27 reserved seats for women and minorities have been restored. The PML-N has won 21 women’s seats and two minority seats, while the PPP, PML-Q and the Iqbal Pakistan Party have been given one seat each.<\/p>\n

In the Sindh Assembly, the PPP has won two and the MQM one seat.<\/p>\n

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 25 reserved seats have been restored. The PML-N and JUI-F have won seven women’s seats each, while the remaining seats have gone to PPP, ANP and PTI parliamentarians. Of the minority seats, two have gone to the PML-N and two to the JUI-F.<\/p>\n

At the national level, the PML-N has won 15 reserved seats, the PPP has four, and the JUI-F has three additional seats. After the decision, the PML-N’s strength in the National Assembly has increased to 125, the PPP’s to 74 and the JUI-F to 11. The ruling coalition now holds a total of 233 seats, securing its two-thirds majority.<\/p>\n
