{"id":85767,"date":"2025-09-13T11:47:56","date_gmt":"2025-09-13T06:47:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/?p=85767"},"modified":"2025-09-13T11:47:56","modified_gmt":"2025-09-13T06:47:56","slug":"general-elections-set-for-march-2026-in-nepal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/world\/general-elections-set-for-march-2026-in-nepal\/","title":{"rendered":"General elections set for March 2026 in Nepal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>KATHMANDU: <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/world\/nepal-pm-sharma-oli-resigns-as-gen-z-protests-intensify\/\">Nepal<\/a>&#8216;s President Ram Chandra Poudel has dissolved parliament and announced general elections for March 5, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>A statement issued by the president&#8217;s office said that the House of <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/pakistan\/putin-invites-pm-shehbaz-to-sco-summit-in-moscow\/\">Representatives<\/a> has been dissolved and a date for new elections has been set.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, President Poudel appointed former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the country&#8217;s first female interim prime minister.<\/p>\n<p>Her appointment came after two days of talks attended by the president, army chief Ashok Raj Singh and protest leaders.<\/p>\n<p>The nationwide protests erupted when the government banned social media, but the situation calmed down only after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Nepal police, 51 people have been killed and more than 1,700 injured in the recent clashes.<\/p>\n<p>India also reacted to Nepal&#8217;s latest political developments, expressing hope that these steps will promote peace and stability.<\/p>\n<p>Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Sushila Karki and said that India is committed to the development and prosperity of the Nepali people.<\/p>\n<h2>Nepal Interim Prime Minister<\/h2>\n<p>Nepal\u2019s former chief justice, Sushila Karki, is likely to be appointed as\u00a0interim prime minister, a source aware of the talks told\u00a0<em>Reuters<\/em>\u00a0on Friday, after intense anti-graft protests led to the resignation of K.P. Sharma Oli.<\/p>\n<p>The Himalayan nation\u2019s worst upheaval in years, which killed 51 people this week and injured more than 1,300 as police fought to control crowds, was sparked by a social media ban, now rolled back. The violence subsided only after Oli resigned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSushila Karki will be appointed interim prime minister,\u201d said a constitutional expert consulted by President Ramchandra Paudel and army chief Ashok Raj Sigdel, who sought anonymity as the negotiations are sensitive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey (Gen Z) want her.
