DHAKA: A Bangladesh court will deliver its verdict in the crimes against humanity<\/a> case against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid today (Monday).<\/p>\n

In the trial, which began on June 1, 2025, several witnesses testified in Hasina Wajid\u2019s absence that Sheikh Hasina Wajid ordered a mass killing.<\/p>\n

Sheikh Hasina Wajid is accused of widespread killings during a crackdown on student movements in 2024, with 1,400 people killed between July and August 2024, according to the United Nations.<\/p>\n

The prosecution has brought five charges against the former prime minister, including failure to prevent the killings, which fall under the category of crimes against humanity under Bangladeshi law. If convicted, Hasina Wajid could face the death penalty.<\/p>\n

Hasina Wajid has been provided with a state-appointed lawyer, but she has refused to accept the court’s authority.<\/p>\n

Defence lawyer Mohammad Amir Hussain said Hasina was forced to flee and claimed that she preferred to stay within the premises of her residence.<\/p>\n

Her party, the banned Awami League, has strongly denied all the allegations and called the case a mere show trial.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the Awami League has announced a nationwide lockdown to protest against the case. In view of the tension, the government has increased security measures, and the army has been put on alert in the capital, Dhaka.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
