DENMARK: Denmark has become the first country in the world<\/a> to completely shut down its postal service due to a dramatic drop in mail.<\/p>\n

The historic service, which spanned 401 years, officially came to an end when veteran postman Brian Rasmussen delivered the country’s last letter.<\/p>\n

The state-run postal service in the Nordic country, PostNord, is currently the only company in the world to have decided to completely end its letter delivery service.<\/p>\n

According to officials, the service was considered outdated and ineffective in the modern digital age.<\/p>\n

According to statistics, the trend of sending letters in Denmark has decreased by 90 percent in the last 25 years. In 2000, PostNord delivered about 1.5 billion letters, while last year this number was only 110 million. Citizens had to pay 2.15 pounds per ticket to send a regular letter, which the public considered expensive.<\/p>\n

The closure of the company will see the removal of 1,500 post boxes across the country, many of which have been sold. Some of the boxes have sold for more than \u00a3200, while others have been preserved in museums so that future generations can see the system.<\/p>\n

The closure of the postal service has left around 1,500 employees unemployed, a third of the company’s total workforce.
