Dubbed the “Wolf Moon,” the unusual event will mark the end of a series of supermoons that began in October 2025, promising to obscure the celestial stars.

A Supermoon occurs when the moon comes closer to Earth than usual, making it appear dramatically larger and brighter. Experts have revealed that the moon will be up to 30 percent brighter and 14 percent larger than a normal full moon, presenting a mesmerizing spectacle for skywatchers.

The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SPARCO) has confirmed that a supermoon will rise in Pakistan on January 3 at 5:51 pm, reaching 99.8% brightness. Skywatchers will have an extended viewing window on both the nights of January 3 and 4, with the moon prominently visible.

During the phenomenon, the moon will be about 362,312 km from Earth, making it appear about 6–7% larger than an average full moon. Astronomers note that supermoons typically appear in series of three to four, and this January 3 event will bring that particular series dramatically closer.

Looking ahead, SPARCO said the next supermoon will be visible in November 2026, which will be the second and final supermoon of the year, with no third expected.

There are different types, a true supermoon occurs at perigee, a blue moon supermoon is a rare second full moon in a month, and a blood moon supermoon occurs during a total lunar eclipse, creating a striking red hue.

Supermoons have fascinated humans for centuries, sparking myths about storms, floods, and the rise of human behavior, while many cultures associate them with spiritual reflection, harvest festivals, and seasonal cycles. Although science shows only minor effects on the tides, the visual spectacle and cultural significance make the supermoon a magical event that captivates skywatchers around the world.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is set to witness the spectacular Supermoon of 2026, when the moon comes closer to Earth, appearing larger and brighter than usual.
