Pakistan marked a significant milestone in scientific and regulatory development with the Punjab Science Enclave Launch<\/strong>, as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister<\/a> Maryam Nawaz formally inaugurated the Punjab Agriculture, Food and Drug Authority (PAFDA) and its advanced laboratory operations in Lahore on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The inauguration ceremony was attended by diplomats from 20 countries, reflecting growing international interest in Pakistan\u2019s efforts to strengthen food safety, agricultural quality, and pharmaceutical regulation. Both leaders welcomed the foreign delegates and highlighted the importance of science-led governance in ensuring public health and consumer protection.<\/p>\n

During the event, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the Punjab government\u2019s efforts and commended Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for prioritising institutional reform and scientific capacity building. The prime minister and the chief minister jointly toured various sections of the authority, including agriculture, food testing, and drug testing laboratories, where they reviewed state-of-the-art equipment and operational systems.<\/p>\n

Modern laboratories and skilled scientific workforce<\/h2>\n

Officials briefed the participants that PAFDA has been established with a strong focus on research, testing accuracy, and transparency. The authority currently employs 232 scientists, most of whom are gold medalists, with women making up nearly 70 percent of the scientific workforce. Experts from other provinces are also working at the facility, making it a national-level centre of excellence rather than a Punjab-only institution.<\/p>\n

According to the briefing, laboratory operations have already been equipped with 42 high-tech machines acquired at a cost of Rs4.4 billion. Authorities confirmed that an additional 565 advanced machines will be added in phases to further enhance testing capacity across food, agriculture, drugs, and cosmetics.<\/p>\n

The establishment of PAFDA is expected to significantly reduce Pakistan\u2019s dependence on foreign laboratories for quality certification. This move will not only save foreign exchange but also speed up regulatory processes for exporters, manufacturers, and consumers.<\/p>\n

Strengthening standards and public safety<\/h2>\n

Government officials stated that the authority will play a central role in ensuring the quality and safety of food items, agricultural inputs, medicines, and cosmetic products. The initiative aligns with the broader \u201cSafe Punjab\u201d vision, under which satellite crime scene units are also being set up in all 38 districts to improve enforcement and monitoring mechanisms.<\/p>\n

Diplomatic attendees welcomed the development, noting that strong regulatory institutions are essential for trade confidence and international cooperation. The Punjab government believes the new authority will improve public trust, protect consumer health, and support economic growth by raising national quality standards.<\/p>\n
