Charging infrastructure delay impacts Pakistan’s EV market

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani government’s delay in finalizing a policy on electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure regulations has hindered EV manufacturers’ entry into the local market.

The lack of coordination among authorities has resulted in a limited number of charging stations, frustrating current EV owners who face a sparse and unreliable charging network.

Despite initial government assurances, EV owners are hesitant to rely solely on electric vehicles due to the inadequate infrastructure.

Complaints include non-functional charging stations, technical issues, and stations being too far apart, making long trips impractical.

Additionally, high upfront costs, rising electricity prices, and perceived unreliability have led many to question the practicality of owning an EV.

A leading Chinese automaker, BYD, plans to manufacture EVs in Pakistan but is uncertain about the timeline for a comprehensive charging infrastructure.

Earlier, BYD automakers made a significant debut in the Pakistani market, starting a new era of eco-friendly transportation.

The announcement of BYD’s investment in Pakistan was made at an event in Islamabad on August 17. Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb delivered a keynote address emphasizing the importance of sustainable innovation for Pakistan’s future.

Draft regulations were proposed by NEPRA last year, but disagreements among stakeholders have delayed their finalization. The government aims to encourage charging station establishment by exempting them from fixed charges and FCA, but a finalized policy is needed to drive progress.
