Sindh govt to launch first ever EV taxi service with female drivers in Pakistan

Govt announces Pink Taxi scheme for women, Eligibility criteria inside

KARACHI: The Sindh government has unfolded plans to launch an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service in Karachi, prioritizing female drivers, as part of a comprehensive strategy to address transportation challenges in the city.

Provincial Minister Sharjeel Memon announced the introduction of the “Pink Taxi Service,” designed to provide a safe and convenient travel option for women.

Memon criticized the previous caretaker government’s handling of traffic issues, attributing the recent surge in transportation problems to their ineptitude.

He emphasized that the current administration is actively working to resolve these issues and upgrade the city’s transport infrastructure.

In addition, the provincial government has resumed work on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, supported by the World Bank, aiming to improve public transport and benefit citizens.

The 26.5-kilometer BRT project will feature new EV buses and bio-gas-powered red line buses, ensuring smooth travel through underpasses.

Moreover, the Minister also criticized the previous PTI government for failing to deliver on promises of employment and housing, asserting that subsequent administrations have been unfairly burdened with addressing their shortcomings.
