State Bank introduces ‘Invest Pak’ digital investment platform

ISLAMABAD: The State Bank of Pakistan has introduced a digital platform called ‘Invest Pak’, through which now even common consumers can invest directly in government securities from just Rs. 5,000.

Investment in government securities in Pakistan was for a long time considered limited to most banks and large financial institutions, but after this project, safe, easy and completely digital access to government securities has been provided to common citizens, youth and overseas Pakistanis.

Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb inaugurated the ‘Invest Pak’ portal in Karachi on July 6, calling it the beginning of a new era of investment in Pakistan. He said that this modern digital platform will make the investment process easy, transparent and effective for domestic and foreign investors.

How does this platform work, in which government securities can one invest through it and how is this system different from the previous one? Before knowing the answer to these questions, it is important to understand what government securities or bonds are.

What are government securities?

Governments around the world often need more resources than tax revenues to meet their expenses. In such a situation, the government borrows money from various investors through bonds instead of simply borrowing from abroad or printing new currency.

A government security is actually a financial contract under which the government receives money from the investor for a fixed period and in return guarantees that it will pay dividends according to the agreed terms and return the principal at the end of the period.

How will the investor receive the profit? It depends on the type of security he has purchased. Some securities pay dividends at fixed intervals, while in others the profit is obtained from the difference between the purchase price and the amount received at the end of the term.

Since the repayment of these securities is the responsibility of the government, it is generally considered a safe investment in Pakistan.

How to invest?

Individual investors, joint account holders, companies and other corporate entities can invest through Invest Pak.

That is, every Pakistani citizen, small investor and corporate company who has an account in any bank can benefit from this facility. Even overseas Pakistanis who have Roshan Digital Account can also benefit from it. For which it is mandatory to register on the Invest Pak portal.

Registration procedure
The investment procedure through the Invest Pak portal of the State Bank of Pakistan is very easy and completely digital. After registering and creating an IPS account at home on the Invest Pak portal, we can start investing.

  • First, create your account on it through the website or by downloading the app.
  • For registration, enter the required information including CNIC number, email and mobile number.
  • Enter the 24-digit International Bank Account Number (IBAN) of your existing bank account.
  • The system will send all this information to your bank for verification.
  • After verification from the bank, you will receive a One-Time Password (OTP) on your registered mobile number and email.
  • After entering the OTP on the portal, your verification will be complete.
  • IPS (Investor Portfolio Securities) Account

Just as you need a regular bank account (current or savings account) to keep your money, similarly, it is mandatory to have an ‘IPS account’ to invest in government securities in digital form.

According to the rules of the State Bank of Pakistan, no ordinary citizen can directly buy or hold government securities without an ‘IPS account’.

If you do not already have an ‘IPS account’, you can also submit an application to open an ‘IPS account’ online during registration on the portal, for which there is no need to visit the bank anymore.

When you buy a government bond through the ‘Invest Pak’ portal, that bond is not available in paper form but is deposited in your ‘IPS account’ in the form of a digital certificate.

Important Securities of the Government of Pakistan

On the Invest Pak portal, the government is providing investors with the facility to invest in various government bonds, which you can buy or sell from the comfort of your home. On this platform, investors are being provided with the opportunity to invest in government securities in the form of Market Treasury Bills, Pakistan Investment Bonds and Ijarah Sukuk.

Market Treasury Bills (MTBs)
These are short-term bonds with a maturity of usually three, six or twelve months. No profit is paid separately on them, but they are sold at a price lower than the original value. That is, the investor buys the bond at a low price and if sold after a specified period, he gets the full price.

For example, if an investor buys a treasury bill for Rs 4,000, he gets Rs 5,000 at maturity. The difference of Rs 1,000 between the purchase and redemption amount is his profit.
