ISLAMABAD: To revise the current net metering system, the federal government is considering a new buyback rate for electricity generated by solar panel users to return to the national grid.
According to the details and latest news, the Power Division has made a draft policy in this regard, and it is set to be presented to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The official has told a local publication that the buyback tariff will be one-third of the base tariff. For the current Fiscal Year, the authorities have decided to fix the buyback rate at Rs11.33 per unit.
While existing solar users will continue to receive Rs. 27 per unit under the net metering arrangement, ensuring no immediate impact on current investments.
Under the new policy, the buyback rate will follow a gross metering mechanism with no provision for net-metering, while purchasing electricity for their use separately, unlike the current system, where energy generation is offset against consumption.
The officials said that net metering has imposed a financial burden of Rs103 billion on the national power system.
