Meat prices surge across Pakistan

KARACHI: Meat prices have surged across Karachi and Lahore despite expectations of a decline due to reduced exports amid tensions in the Middle East.

In Karachi, mutton prices have climbed to as high as Rs2,700 per kilogram, up to Rs300. Veal with bones is being sold between Rs1,400 and Rs1,500 per kg, while boneless veal has reached Rs1,800 per kg.

After recent price increases, beef prices (cow meat) now range between Rs1,350 and Rs1,500 per kilogram. The meat prices in Lahore exceed mutton prices, which range from Rs2,800 to Rs3,200 per kilogram, and beef prices, which range from Rs1,200 to Rs1,600 per kilogram across different markets.

The prices exceed official rates, which the Karachi commissioner established this year, because retailers fail to follow the notified prices and do not show official lists at their stores.

Traders state that diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) costs have become more expensive, which has led to increased transportation and operational costs that drive up prices.

Market participants claim that there exists a livestock shortage, which primarily affects the goat population. Demand has also surged ahead of Eid al-Fitr and continues to remain high due to the ongoing wedding season, further pushing prices upward.

Experts predict that the current high meat prices will result in increased costs for sacrificial animals during Eid al-Adha because market conditions and consumer purchasing power directly determine prices.

According to industry representatives, meat exports account for only a small portion of total consumption, suggesting domestic supply issues are a major factor behind rising prices.
