ISLAMABAD: The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) on Tuesday rejected social media reports claiming it had sent a summary to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif proposing a major increase in petroleum prices.

The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) confirmed that no proposal exists that recommends a petrol price increase of Rs 73.40 per litre or a diesel price increase of Rs 84.95 per litre.

An OGRA spokesperson declared the circulating claim to be completely baseless, and he advised people to avoid believing unverified information that circulates on the internet.

The federal government raised petrol and high-speed diesel prices by Rs 55 per litre after global oil prices increased because of the ongoing United States-Israel-Iran conflict.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said global oil markets had reacted sharply, with crude prices jumping from around $60 to over $100 per barrel. He predicted fuel prices would increase further because of rising global oil prices but he promised the government would work to reduce costs for citizens.
