LAHORE: Rice prices have risen sharply in the largest wholesale market in southern Punjab, leaving both traders and consumers concerned about the rising cost of a staple commodity.
Rice prices in Multan’s grain market have increased by Rs500 to Rs1,000 per maund. The price of a popular variety of Sayla Kainat rice has increased from Rs10,700 to Rs11,700 per maund, while the price of raw Kainat rice has increased from Rs10,300 to Rs10,800 per maund.
At the wholesale level, rice is now being sold between Rs270 and Rs292 per kg, but prices in the open market have increased even further, reaching Rs320 to Rs330 per kg.
The sudden increase has raised concerns among citizens, especially daily wage earners and middle-income families, who say the rising prices are putting basic food items out of reach. Consumers are demanding the government take immediate steps to ensure price stability and affordability in the market.
