ISLAMABAD: Solar panel prices have surged across Pakistan after the federal government proposed to impose an 18 percent sales tax on imported solar panels in the 2025-26 budget.
Industry stakeholders and consumers alike have expressed concern over the move, fearing that it could slow down the country’s transition to clean and affordable energy.
Over the past five years, Pakistan’s solar industry has grown rapidly, driven by rising electricity tariffs and frequent power outages. Many households, businesses and agricultural units have turned to solar systems as a one-time investment for long-term financial and environmental benefits. However, the proposed tax move has destabilized market trends.
However, traders and solar importers have urged the government to reconsider the decision, warning that the move will increase the cost of solar system installations and affect middle-class households looking for affordable energy alternatives.
