PESHAWAR: In a significant development, Adviser to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister for Health, Ahtisham Ali, announced that the provincial government is providing internships to overseas Pakistani medical students.

This initiative aims to support students who have obtained degrees from foreign medical colleges and universities. Speaking in the KP Assembly, Ali clarified that these internships will be awarded based on merit and available in all teaching medical institutions across the province, albeit on limited seats.

However, Ali highlighted two primary challenges that the program might face, that there are only limited seats available and secondally, the financial constraints.  Despite these hurdles, the government is committed to providing opportunities to deserving students.

Earlier, MPA Abdul Salam raised concerns about overseas medical students being deprived of paid house jobs at medical teaching institutions in KP. He termed this a “great injustice” and demanded payment for all house job doctors.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s effort to provide internships is a step towards addressing the concerns of medical students. However, the issue of paid house jobs remains unresolved, and its resolution will be crucial in supporting the future of medical professionals in the province.
