LAHORE: After an alert over smog, there has been speculation about possible school closures in Punjab, with the question being whether early winter vacations would be declared this year, similar to last year.
The Meteorological Department, as per reports, has issued an alarming warning regarding deteriorating smog levels in several cities of Punjab, especially Lahore, where air pollution is continuing to increase and might suspend educational activities.
The department further informed that because of continuous dry weather, the level of smog is likely to degrade further in the next few days.
Lahore has again topped the list of the world’s most polluted cities today, with its Air Quality Index (AQI) touching a dangerous level of 362.
However, in Punjab, authorities have declared all reports on school closings or early winter breaks this year circulating on various online platforms as false.
The deteriorating smog fueled rumors of early winter holidays in schools in Punjab. Officials, however, made it clear that no decision has been taken on closing schools or having an early vacation this year in Punjab.
The authorities remind the people to pay attention to official announcements from the Education Department and the Punjab government.
In November last year, on 3 November, the Punjab government had closed schools for a week and then later extended the holidays for another week because of severe smog.
The authorities are keeping a close watch on the weather but have yet to issue an official decision on whether to close the schools.
