Sindh Assembly: Newly elected MPAs take oath

KARACHI: Governor Kamran Khan Tessori called the first meeting of the 16th provincial legislature today, at which point the recently elected members of the Sindh Assembly swore an oath of office.

The newly elected MPAs were sworn in by outgoing Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Khan Durrani, who also presided over the assembly’s first session. In the midst of heavy security, the newly elected Sindh Assembly members took the oath of office in the house of 168 on Saturday. At least 163 of them did so.

Ten members, including women from the Qaumi Awami Tehreek who had protested outside the Sindh Assembly against the suspected cheating of the general elections on February 8th, were detained by the police before to the swearing-in event. The demonstrators were also hit with baton charges by the law enforcement officers. A timeline for the election of the speaker and deputy speaker will be released following the oath-taking ceremony.

MPA Syed Waseem of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) stated that Sofia Saeed and Rashid Khan were the party’s nominees for speaker and deputy speaker, respectively. According to him, MQM-P wanted the province’s problems resolved in concert with other stakeholders.

PPP’s nominees for the speaker and deputy speaker positions of the Sindh Assembly are Syed Awais Qadir Shah and Anthony Naveed, respectively. Murad Ali Shah, the PPP’s candidate for chief minister, claimed to have previously stated how many seats they would win. He stated that they won more seats than anticipated. According to Shah, Pakistan has several problems that would be handled in cooperation with other parties.
