JHANG: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab and other relevant departments on Friday carried out a controlled breach on the embankment of the Chenab River near the Rivaz Bridge to protect Jhang from deluge.

District administration Jhang said that rescue measures are being taken to protect the lives and property of citizens.

“People living adjacent to the river have been evacuated,” according to Relief Commissioner Punjab Nabil Javed.

Earlier, the emergency meeting, presided over by the Punjab Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman, decided to breach the Rivaz Bridge on the River Chenab to divert water flow to a safer route.

As of 1:40 pm, the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) has issued warnings of high to extremely high flood levels in multiple rivers across Pakistan as water levels continue to rise amid ongoing monsoon inflows.

The FFD predicted an exceptionally high flood at the Trimmu Barrage on the Chenab River within the next 24 hours, as the high flood is currently passing through Chiniot and Jhang. A similar situation of flood will be observed at Panjnad by September 2.

The FFD has forecast high flood levels in the Indus River at Guddu and Sukkur on September 4 and 5 as upstream pressure builds.

“The Chenab River is currently experiencing high flood levels at Qadirabad, while moderate flooding is reported at Khanki and low flood levels at Marala,” the FFD said.

In River Ravi, an extremely high flood is recorded at Shahdara, with high flood levels at Balloki and moderate flooding at Jassar. However, the FFD notes that the intensity at Shahdara is expected to gradually decrease over the next 24 hours.

An extremely high flood also continues at Ganda Singh Wala on the Sutlej River, with floodwaters likely to persist in the coming days.
