KARACHI: A 48-year-old woman from Karachi’s eastern district has become the first dengue fever fatality in Sindh this year, health officials said on Saturday.

According to the Sindh Health Department, the woman was admitted to the Aga Khan University Hospital on July 23 after showing symptoms of the mosquito-borne viral disease. Her diagnostic tests later confirmed a positive dengue infection.

Officials said the patient was also suffering from underlying health conditions, including diabetes and urinary tract infection (UTI), which may have aggravated the disease. She succumbed to complications related to the disease on Thursday.

This is the first dengue-related death in Sindh in 2025. A total of 345 cases have been reported across the province so far, most of them from Karachi.

The health department has urged citizens to take precautionary measures, including avoiding stagnant water, using mosquito repellents and ensuring regular fumigation of homes and public places.

Dengue, a viral infection spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, typically peaks during the monsoon season in Pakistan, adding pressure to an already strained public health infrastructure.
