Asif Ali Zardari elected Pakistan’s president for second time

With a resounding majority, Asif Ali Zardari, the co-chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party, has won a second term as president, defeating Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the candidate supported by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and the Sunni Ittehad Council.

Asif Ali Zardari has been elected as the 14th President of Pakistan, Asif Zardari has received 255 votes from Senate and National Assembly while his opponent Mahmood Khan Achakzai has managed to get 119 votes.

The members of the four provincial assemblies, the National Assembly and the Senate cast their votes for the presidential candidates through a secret ballot. The Chief Election Commissioner performed the duties of the Returning Officer, polling continued from 10 am to 4 pm in the National and Provincial Assemblies.

296 members of the National Assembly and 84 members of the Senate cast their votes for the presidential elections, while 352 members of the Punjab Assembly and 109 members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly have cast their votes.

Similarly, 161 members cast their votes in the Sindh Assembly, while 47 members cast their votes in the Balochistan Assembly.

Former President Asif Ali Zardari from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa got 17 votes while his opponent Mahmood Khan Achakzai of Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party got 91 votes. While in the Sindh Assembly, Asif Zardari has secured 151 votes while Mahmood Khan Achakzai managed to secure 9 votes.
