Punjab Assembly: PML-N’s Malik Ahmad Khan elected as speaker

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Malik Ahmad Khan was elected as Speaker of the Punjab Assembly and Malik Zaheer Channer as deputy speaker on Saturday.

The provincial assembly session on Saturday started after a delay of one-and-a-half hours evening elected the speaker and deputy speaker in a long voting and counting process.

Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan of PML-N secured 224 votes to become the Speaker of the House against Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) candidate Ahmad Khan Bhachar, who bagged 96 votes, while two votes were rejected out of the total 322 ballots cast during the polling.

Newly-elected Speaker Malik Ahmed administered the oath to Channer as deputy speaker. The assembly session was adjourned till 11 am on Monday.

In another development, the provincial assembly will elect the Punjab chief minister today as PML-N’s candidate Maryam Nawaz is ahead in the number game for the CMship.
