Sindh Rangers seeks police power across province

KARACHI: During a meeting regarding law and order in the Sindh High Court on Saturday, DG Rangers Sindh sought police powers for Rangers to ensure law and order in the province. The meeting lasted more than four hours and discussed rising street crime, safe city, and street robbers in the province.

The high court had summoned the Sindh Rangers director general, DIGs of Sukkur and Larkana, and heads of police from different cities to the meeting. DG Rangers and IG Sindh Police submitted the report.

DG Rangers Sindh said in the meeting that the Rangers should be given the same powers that were given against terrorism in Karachi and authority should be extended all over the province on the same pattern of Karachi.

According to sources, the Chief Justice asked to tell why people are being kidnapped, and who is involved in the kidnapping of citizens. The Chief Justice directed to control the incidents of street crime in Karachi. He advised police and Rangers to conduct joint operations.

Strict action should be taken against those who run the dacoits in the Katcha areas, CJ SHC said that their names should be brought to light. “No matter how powerful the patron may be, they should be brought under the law.”

Speaking after the meeting, IG Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon said that according to the meeting, three agendas, street crime, safe city, and street robbers were discussed in the meeting. There was talk about increasing patrols to stop street crime. IG Sindh said that we have submitted our reports and given suggestions, and the police will ensure that false cases are not made.

While taking to the reports after the meeting, Sindh IGP Ghulam Nabi Memon said that a meeting would be held after 15 days and the progress report would also be presented in the meeting.

In the recent past, the southern province has seen an increase in crime, and many people have lost their lives. Street crimes and the presence of dacoits in the riverine areas (Katcha) have disturbed the situation.

Sindh government was told last month that nearly 16,000 street crimes had been recorded in the port city since January. Home Minister Zia Lanjar and IGP Riffat Mukhtar had said that 7,822 cases of street crime in the city were recorded in January 2024, 5,876 in February, and 2,234 till 12 March.
