ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved key changes to the Mera Ghar Mera Aashiana low-cost housing mortgage scheme. The maximum loan limit has been increased to Rs10 million.

The ECC meeting was held on Friday at the Finance Division under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb. The committee also reduced the mark-up rate from 8% to a uniform 5%, making loans more affordable for applicants.

The revised scheme targets the financing of around 500,000 housing units over the next four years. Eligible units include houses up to 10 marlas or flats up to 1,500 sq ft. The end-user pricing has been fixed at 5% to standardize loan repayments.

Top officials confirmed that since its launch, the scheme has received over 10,594 applications totaling Rs32.288 billion. Out of these, 344 loans amounting to Rs810 million have already been disbursed.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has emphasized that the scheme’s loan and portfolio sizes should remain aligned with the approved framework. The ECC also approved a subsidy schedule linked to actual disbursements, ensuring fiscal responsibility and broader public access to housing finance.

The revised framework aims to boost construction activity, create employment, and promote sustainable home ownership through a balanced risk-sharing and mark-up subsidy model. Implementation will continue under the State Bank of Pakistan’s mechanism.
