ISLAMABAD: Authorities in Spain have arrested 10 Pakistani nationals in Barcelona during a major operation on terrorism-related charges and promoting extremism.
A joint operation was conducted by the Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalonia Police), Spanish National Police, and Italian law enforcement agencies, media reported, citing statement issued by the Spanish authorities.
According to officials, the arrested individuals of Pakistan-origin were allegedly involved in inciting violence and spreading extremist ideologies.
The group was reportedly linked to a radical organization, based on extremist ideologies, that used online messaging apps to promote extremism and issue violent directives.
Furthermore, the Spanish authorities alleged that some members of the network were involved in identifying potential targets for attacks across Europe.
As part of the same investigation, another suspect was detained in Italy. The arrests took place during an operation conducted on the night of March 3.
The 10 individuals were presented on March 6 before Spain’s Central Investigation Court No. 6, where they faced charges including terrorist financing, recruitment for extremism, and supporting radicalization.
The court ordered the detention of four individuals, while the others remain under investigation.
Officials have ruled out any foreign connections, asserting that the organisation operated solely within Spain. The group’s suspected leader is reportedly a 55-year-old Pakistani national.
This operation follows the previous arrests of five individuals in 2022 and 14 in 2023, bringing the total number of detainees linked to the case to 30.
