MADRID: A boat carrying illegal immigrants from Mauritania to Spain capsized, killing 50 migrants, including 44 Pakistanis, here on Thursday.

According to international media, the migrant rights organization Walking Borders reported that the boat was traveling from West Africa to Spain.

The boat, which left Mauritania on January 2, was carrying 86 people, of whom 66 were Pakistanis. Only 36 migrants were rescued.

The Pakistani victims had left their homes four months ago in the hope of reaching Europe. Twelve of the dead were from Gujarat.

Alarm Phone, an organization, revealed that the missing boat had been reported to the authorities of the relevant countries six days ago.

Furthermore, on January 12, Spain’s maritime rescue service was alerted but claimed that they had no information about the boat.

Helena Maleno, CEO of Walking Borders, told X that the victims included 44 Pakistanis who suffered at sea for 13 days, with no one to help them.

Walking Borders also said that a record 10,457 migrants died while trying to reach Spain in 2024.
