LAHORE: In a major move towards social welfare and addressing housing issues, the government of Punjab has made an investment of Rs42.013 billion under its flagship housing assistance program, ‘Apni Chat Apna Ghar‘. It is the biggest provincial investment in interest-free housing assistance in Punjab’s history.
The funds, made available under the Annual Development Programme 2025–26, have been deposited into the Punjab Housing and Town Planning Agency (PHATA) account to expand the program within the urban development department.
The funds are allocated following a suggestion from the Housing, Urban Development & Public Health Engineering Department (HUD&PHED), which highlighted the scheme’s growing reach and popularity.
Inaugurated in August 2024, the program offers interest-free loans of Rs1.5 million to those who own land to build their houses. So far, more than 51,900 families have availed themselves of the benefit, with 6,160 homes finished and 45,163 homes being built in the province.
In a high-level review meeting, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz ordered concerned departments to accelerate loan processing and application approvals, providing necessary assistance to deserving families at the earliest.
“This project is not just about constructing houses — it’s about restoring dignity and bringing stability to individuals who have lived with insecurity for far too long,” stated CM Maryam Nawaz. “Every house constructed is a reflection of the government’s commitment and a step towards realizing Quaid Nawaz Sharif’s vision of inclusive development.”
It was briefed at the meeting by Housing Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal that there are no geographical boundaries all eligible people from any region in Punjab can apply.
He laid stress on the fact that the scheme is meant for those who were earlier deprived of access to financial sources, such as daily wage earners, widows, gardeners, vendors, shopkeepers, and other low-paid citizens.
So far, over Rs60.5 billion have been disbursed under the scheme, with the new Rs42 billion disbursement likely to further widen its reach in the months to come.
Referring to the scheme as “a fresh start” for deprived communities, CM Maryam Nawaz announced, “When a poor family is finally able to own a home, it’s not merely a personal achievement — it’s the state doing its job. Politics now equals service, not slogans.
With this newest release, the Punjab government renews its commitment towards people-centric governance. While ‘Apni Chat Apna Ghar’ is moving forward with full steam, it is slowly but surely becoming the face of hope and development, making thousands of people owners of their homes and financial stability.
