LAHORE: In a groundbreaking move, the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) honored Pakistan and Punjab by naming Lahore its ‘Tourism Capital’ for 2027.
A 25-member delegation from the ECO, representing ten member states, visited Lahore starting April 13 to make the official announcement. This distinction recognizes Lahore’s rich historical, cultural, and tourism heritage.
The ECO’s Permanent Representatives Council met at the Civil Secretariat, hosted by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Founded in 1964 by Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey, the ECO aims to promote regional cooperation.
Its member nations include Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
By selecting Lahore as the ‘ECO Capital of Tourism‘, the organization highlights the city’s significance in the region’s cultural and historical landscape.
This recognition boosts Lahore’s profile as a tourist destination and fosters cross-border tourism, further strengthened by initiatives like the year-round opening of the Khunjerab Pass.
